Who we areMeilir Page-Jones photo

Wayland Systems is a consulting, training and systems-development company based in the USA Pacific Northwest. It was founded in 1981 by Meilir Page-Jones, who has written several books and articles on software engineering and currently blogs on business-analysis and management topics.

We provide training courses, usually as in-house workshops, although we sometimes put on public presentations. We also provide both occasional and full-time consulting on analysis and development projects.

We specialize in applying modern modeling techniques to business, scientific and embedded systems applications. This includes modeling for:

We emphasize the value of good modeling - not just in traditional code development, but also in business analysis, quality assessment and management. And yes, even in agile projects!

Our mission

We’ve worked hard to develop a snappy and impressive mission statement. Our original one:

Serving certain parts of North America since 1981.
was banal and anyway it wasn’t really a mission statement. Neither was it the whole truth, since we’ve been training and consulting all over the world since 1983.

So we hired a high-priced mission-statement consultant, who said that our mission statement should emphasize the “human aspects” of our business over the technical ones. He came up with:

People helping people to develop systems to help people help other people.
That was unwieldy.

So we hired a low-priced consultant, who pointed out that every worthwhile mission statement should begin with the words "committed to". This expert came up with simply:

Committed to bringing fun to system developers.

Hmm .... Well we got rid of all the high-priced and low-priced mission consultants and decided on:

Bringing mastery of business and system modeling to a shop near you.
