About Wayland SystemsWayland Systems is a consulting, training and systems-development company based in the Pacific Northwest of the USA. It was founded in 1981 by Meilir Page-Jones who has written several books and articles on software engineering. Throughout the 1980s we specialized in applying structured software techniques to business, scientific and embedded systems development. Since 1990, much of our business has focused on applying object-oriented techniques to systems development. From our work with object orientation, we have constructed an analysis and design approach tailored to OO development. Its called the Synthesis Methodology and you can find a synopsis of it on this site. We provide training courses, usually as in-house workshops although we sometimes put on public presentations. We also provide both occasional and regular consulting on systems-development projects.
Our MissionWeve worked hard to develop a snappy and impressive mission statement. Our original one:Serving much of North America since 1981.wasnt really a mission statement and, anyway, it was kind of banal. It also wasnt the whole truth, since weve been training and consulting all over the world since 1983. So we hired a high-priced mission-statement consultant, who said that our mission should emphasize the “human aspects” of our business over the technical ones. He came up with: People helping people to develop systems to help people help other people. This was unwieldy. So we hired a low-priced consultant, who came up with simply: Bringing joy to system developers. This seemed a bit soppy — and why should system developers have any joy anyway? ...So we changed it to:
